Reserve Reports
Mundesley
reserves lost 3-1 at home against Corpusty.
With
four players making their debut on a blustery afternoon, the reserves found it
difficult to get going but did create some half chances mostly through the
strong runs from Campbell. Indeed it was Campbell who came the closest with a
stunning volley which smashed against the bar when it looked destined to find
the net for what would have been his first goal for the club.
Corpusty
also created a couple of half chances and the home side were let off when a one
on one went wide. The away side eventually took the lead when a speculative
effort dipped and swerved past the Mundesley keeper.
Mundesley
came out brightly in the second half trying to come back from 1-0 down and
again had most joy down the left from Campbell beating his man and getting
behind the Corpusty defence only for his crosses to find the keeper. However,
it was the away side that scored next to make it 2-0 and Mundesley heads could
have gone down. They didn’t, and a retaken free kick was perfectly executed by
Jake Bonham for his first goal for the club to make it 2-1 and potentially set
up a super finish. This never came as Corpusty soon restored the two goal lead
through a defensive mix up.
The
bright Campbell then hobbled off injured and was replaced by debutant White who
looked very strong and asked a few questions of the Corpusty defence. White had
a strike that flew over the bar and then Bonham had another direct free kick –
but this time went straight into the keepers hands.
The
home side did finish strongly and deserved to get another one back but didn’t create
any more clear chances.
Final
score Mundesley 3 Corpusty 1. Man
of the match: Derek Campbell

Mundesley reserves notched their first win of the season with a comfortable 2-0 home win over Felmingham.
With 11 players unavailable, and two players stepping up to the 1st team, the reserves were seemingly up against it even before a ball had been kicked. Added to this, they arrived at MADRA, for the first time this season, with no recognised keeper. Harvey stepped up to the challenge and Ian Wheeler filled in, in the second half, but in reality neither were needed as the Mundesley goal was never threatened.
Mundesley started brightly, as they had done in their first 2 games, and were finally rewarded with their first goal of the season, Wild crossing for Linsey to beat his man and strike the ball past the keeper. This should be the start of many for Linsey who scored 33 last season. The home side looked far more solid at the back with the experience of Bonham, in for Ellmore and Goodspeed, who came in to centre back allowing player manager Stroud to push into a midfield five. They controlled everything and limited Felmingham to just a few long range efforts and went in at the break 1-0 up. The second half was a very similar affair with Mundesley battling a little more than they would have liked and brought on Blyth to give more bite in midfield and later Harwood to support Linsey and eventually added a second to take all the points. Payne doing well down the left channel, rolled the ball back to Stroud, who looked up, picked out Harwood in the penalty area, and with 23 goals last year, had the confidence to cut inside his man and slot it past the keeper.
A much needed and deserved performance, clean sheet and three points for the Mallards. Well done to the whole squad and especially to Martin Goodspeed who was Man of the Match.
The reserves travel to Haisbro next week, 2.30pm ko.
Playing away for the second consecutive game Mundesley saw a repeat scoreline of their 1st game, going down 5-0 at Buxton.
Due to at least 7 1st team players being unavailable for the cup trip to Heacham and two players calling off with injury on the day, the reserves were forced to introduce a new keeper and a new centre back and welcomed back on the bench Wayne Ellis who has been out for a whole year after a serious knee injury. This could have made things very difficult but actually Mundesley started more brightly, were definitely the better team and had chances through Campbell and half chances from Linsey. However, from one away team attack, Buxton broke away and scored to make it 1-0 and it was a familiar story as they made it 3-0 at the break. Mundesley played better in the second half but poor defending lead to a 4th and a late goal flattered Buxton who seemed to score with every chance they got while at the other end it was never to be the away sides day with chances going begging from Bonham, Stroud and Linsey amongst others.
Much work is needed as well as the return of some key players to kick start the reserves’ season. The lads should not be down as last year the reserves lost their opening two matches and again, the younger players all played well, with man of the match going to Sam Fitt who never gave up in midfield.
THE FIRST GAME SINCE LAST SEASON’S PROMOTION, THE RESERVES STARTED WITH A RE-ARRANGED TRIP TO AYLSHAM AWAY AND CAME AWAY WITH A 5-0 DEFEAT.
DUE TO THE SUCCESS OF THE CLUB WITH DEVELOPING PLAYERS, A FEW OF THE SQUAD HAD MOVED TO HIGHER LEAGUE CLUBS, AND ADDED TO THE FACT THAT 6 FIRST TEAM PLAYERS WERE UNAVAILABLE FOR SELECTION, THE RESERVES HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO BRING TO THE STARTING LINE-UP FOUR 16 YEAR OLDS. NONE OF THESE DISAPPOINTED AND DID NOT DESERVE TO BE ON THE END OF SUCH A DEFEAT. BOTH TEAMS STARTED EVENLY BUT IT WAS AYLSHAM WHO CREATED EARLY ON AND EVENTUALLY SCORED WITH A CRACKING HEADER. A DEFENSIVE ERROR ALLOWED THE HOME SIDE TO BREAK AWAY TO MAKE IT 2-0 BUT IT COULD SO EASILY HAVE BEEN 4-3. THE MUNDESLEY KEEPER, RYAN OLIVER, ONE OF THE 16 YEAR OLDS, WAS SUPERB BETWEEN THE STICKS AND MADE SOME VERY MATURE, EXCELLENT SAVES WITH BOTH HIS HANDS AND FEET. GOING FORWARD THE AWAY SIDE HAD SOME GREAT CHANCES AFTER INCREDIBLE CREATIVITY LEADING TO ONE ON ONES FOR HARWOOD AND TWICE FOR CAMPBELL AND STRIKES FROM SMITH AND WHEELER. MUNDESLEY REMAINED POSITIVE AND MATCHED AYLSHAM IN THE SECOND HALF FOR PERFORMANCE AND AGAIN CREATED OPPORTUNITIES FOR CAMPBELL AND HARWOOD AMONGST OTHERS AND HAD AN UNFAIRLY DISALLOWED GOAL FOR THE FRUSTRATED HARWOOD. BONHAM, ANOTHER OF THE 16 YEAR OLDS, DID NOT GET THE CHANCE TO SHINE ON THE RIGHT WING AND WAS REPLACED LATE ON BY LAST SEASONS TOP SCORER LINSEY WITH THE IMPRESSIVE SMITH SWITCHING TO THE RIGHT, BUT STILL MUNDESLEY COULD NOT SCORE. WITH THE AWAY SIDE PUSHING UP AYLSHAM SCORED LATE GOALS TO FLATTER THEM AND IT WAS UNJUST ON OLIVER IN GOAL AS HE MADE MORE SUPER SAVES TO TAKE THE MUNDESLEY MAN OF THE MATCH PERFORMANCE. DESPITE THE RESULT THE FUTURE IS VERY BRIGHT FOR MUNDESLEY FOOTBALL CLUB.
