1st Team match reports

Mundesley entertained East Ruston in a league one match at MADRA. Both teams struggled to find a consistent flow going forward and the defence of both were in control. Bad luck struck again when right back Jim Drake had to go off injured after only 20 minutes and then the away side took the lead when the referee gave a very harsh penalty against Robert Todd for handball, although there were no appeals from the Ruston players. Mundesley pushed forward and were unlucky on several occasions not to equalise before half time. The second half saw Mundesley push forward from the start and although they had many chances it wasn't going to be their day once again, despite the efforts of all invloved. East Ruston made it 2-0 with a few minutes left as the home team threw everything forward. Man of the match Paul Clarke looked sharp on his return to the side and Mundesley will look to him to create chances in the final third. It is never easy when you are in the bottom half of the league- but the spirit is good in the team and we are determined to turn it around. With only a third of the season gone there is a lot of football still to be played. Next week Mundesley travel to Coltishall; 5-a-side and Training every Wednesday in North Walsham sports hall 9-10pm.

Mundesley travelled to Corpusty on a very wet and windy afternoon looking for a little piece of luck to go their way this season. Mundesley only had the bare eleven as late call offs reduced the squad again this week. But this team never give up and they outplayed their opponents for the second week runinng but found themselves 1-0 down at half time after a rare attack by the home team was well finished off. The away team were not down hearted and continued to press in the second half with Needham going close with a pile driver from the edge of the box. Mundesley finally had a reward for their dominance when a shot by Cairns found its way past the home keeper to make it 1-1. It looked like Corpusty were happy to settle for a draw as mundesley pushed forward for a winner with Harvey, Wilton and Holden going close. But when your luck is not with you it tends to kick you hard-with just a few minutes to go, A free kick on the edge of the Mundesley box found its waypast Cobbold and into the net after two deflections - the second from defender Loose who once again had an excellent game in defence. Final score 2-1 to Corpusty. Next week Mundesley entertain East Ruston and with Clarke, Stephens, Todd, Drake, Bunting and others set to return they will have a full squad and be hoping a little luck comes their way! Keep going lads; 5-a-side and Training every Wednesday in North Walsham sports hall 9-10pm.

Mundesley 1st team narrowly lost to The Albion in the 2nd round of the Junior Cup, 4-3 after extra time.

10th Oct
Mundesley travelled to Lyng looking for their first win in the league this season. With players still unavailable for the first team Mundesley had to call off their reserve game to ensure they had enough players to fulfill the division one fixture at Lyng. The home team took an early lead after Joe Clarke was ajudged to have handled the ball in the box. Cobbold in the Mundesley goal has a good record of penalty saves but could do nothing to stop this one. Mundesley then started to play the ball to feet and created chance after chance to score. Patience was required and they continued to play some excellent one touch football. They were rewarded with three good goals with no reply from Lyng. 3-1 to Mundesley at half time. The second half saw Mundesley continue to push forward and create many chances with only some glaring misses keping the score in single figures! With only two more goals in the second half it ended Mundesley 5, Lyng 1. Mundesley scorers were Harwood (3), Moakes (1) and Holden (1). A very satisfing performance from Mundesley and with players still to return this season they can continue to build on this victory and climb the table. Thank you to all the players for an excellent effort and a special thank you to the reserve players who stepped up to the mark. Team: Cobbold; Needham; Todd (captain); Loose; Drake; Williams; Moakes; Briggs; Clarke J; Harwood; Holden; Subs- Bonham J; Linsey; Campbell. Both Mundesley teams are at home next week. Training is Wednesday 7pm at MADRA.

Oct 3rd
Mundesley entertained Ludham in a league one fixture which was spoilt by a wind blowing straight down the pitch. Mundesley played the first half against the wind and held Ludham to a few set piece chances. It was the home team that created the better chances and were made to pay for not taking them as Ludham scored with a shot from the edge of the box after Mundesley failed to clear a corner. This was the last action of the first half and despite Mundesley pushing on in the second half Ludham held firm for a 1-0 victory. This was another game where the ~Mundesley defence never really looked troubled, but they need to convert their possesion into goals. Man of the match was captain Robert Todd. Next week Mundesley are away to Lyng (2-30pm KO) and will have a full strentgh squad to pick from.

Mundesley travelled to Heacham in the Norfolk junior cup 1st round and came away with a 5-2 win over their north west norfolk opponents. The first 20 minutes saw the home team settle quicker and Mundesley, with regular 1st team players missing looked tired and out of sorts after their long journey to the west of the county. the Mundesley keeper Cobbold and defence of Needham, Oliver, Loose and captain Todd kept the Heacham forwards at bay as the away team finally settled and started to push Heacham back. And it was with the run of play that  Mundesley found the net 3 times in the first half; all the goals scored by Holden who is building a good understanding with Stephens up front. The second half saw Mundesley continue to push forward with hard graft from midfielders Williams, Harwood, Briggs, and Moakes. Moakes made way for J.Bonham who came on as a late substitute and almost made it six for the away team in the dying minutes; the ball just running away at the crucial time. The away teams good work was worth it with another 2 goals; one each for Stephens and Holden; his 4th of the day.  It was a very hot day and both teams put on a fantastic show for the watching supporters. A big thank you to Heacham FC for their hospitality, before, during and after the game; a credit to their League. Well done to Mundesley and we look forward to a home draw in the next round! Mundesley looked like a team that is starting to enjoy winning again and with no game next week it is unfortunate they will have to wait until 3rd October to play again. Training is Wednesdays at MADRA, 7pm start.

MUNDESLEY TRAVELLED TO BUXTON RESRVES IN THE BENEVOLANT CUP 1ST ROUND. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A DIFFICULT GAME GIVEN MUNDESLEYS INDIFFERENT START TO THE SEASON, BUT THEY APPLIED THEMSELVES WELL AND CAME AWAY WITH A DESERVED WIN. THE HOME TEAM NEVER REALLY THREATENED AND A MUNDESLEY DEFENCE OF DRAKE, LOOSE, MOAKES, NEEDHAM AND EXTRA SUPPORT FROM JOE CLARKE WERE ALWAYS IN CONTROL. COBBOLD IN THE MUNDESLEY GOAL WAS NEVER REALLY TESTED FOR THE THIRD GAME IN A ROW. HARVEY HAD A HEADER CLEARED OFF THE LINE WITH WHAT LOOKED LIKE AN ARM BUT THE PENALTY WAS NOT GIVEN. AT HALF TIME IT WAS 0-0. THE MIDFIELD OF BRIGGS, STEPHENS, WILLIAMS AND PAUL CLARKE HAD COMMANDED THE GAME BUT A VERY HOT DAY TOOK IT'S TOLL ON SOME OF THE PLAYERS AND MUNDESLEY FRESHENED IT UP WITH 3 SUBSTITUTES EARLY IN THE THE SECOND HALF. HOLDEN CAME ON UP FRONT AND LOOKED SHARP WITH HIS INTELLIGENT RUNNING OFF THE BALL-INDEED HE COULD HAVE HAD A HATRICK WITHIN 10 MINUTES OF COMING ON. BUNTING, ANOTHER SUBSTITUTE WAS COMPOSED AND TOGETHER WITH WILLIAMS CREATED CHANCE AFTER CHANCE, AND IT WAS WILLIAMS WHO SCORED THE WINNER WITH A 'WELL-PLACED' SHOT INTO THE FAR CORNER AFTER A CLEVER SHORT CORNER BY MOAKES. A WELCOME BACK TO THE MUNDESLEY CLUB CAPTAIN, ROBERT TODD, WHO MADE HIS FIRST APPEARANCE OF THE SEASON COMING ON AS SUBSTITUTE AT LEFT BACK. FINAL SCORE 1-0 TO MUNDESLEY. MAN OF THE MATCH FOR AN INSPIRED SECOND HALF SUBSTITUTES DISPLAY WAS LOUIS HOLDEN. THE NEXT GAME IS ON 19TH SEPT, KO 2-30PM, AWAY TO HEACHAM IN THE JUNIOR CUP 1ST ROUND.. TRAINING IS AT MADRA ON WEDNESDAYS - 7PM START

MUNDESLEY TRAVELLED TO RUNTON FOR THEIR SECOND LEAGUE GAME. DUE TO INJURIES, OTHER COMMITTMENTS AND BEING LET DOWN AT THE LAST MINUTE, MUNDESLEY HAD A BARE ELEVEN TO FACE A PHYSICAL RUNTON SIDE. THE WIND HELPED RUNTON PRESSURE MUNDESLEY IN THE FIRST HALF AND RUNTON TOOK A 2-0 LEAD WITHIN 15 MINUTES. MUNDESLEY RE GROUPED AND MADE SEVERAL CHANCES WITH HARVEY SCORING TO MAKE IT 2-1 AT HALF TIME. MUNDESLEY PUSHED ON IN THE SECOND HALF AND COULD HAVE SCORED A COUPLE BUT IT WAS RUNTON WHO BROKE AWAY TO MAKE 3-1 IN THE LAST FEW MINUTES. MUNDESLEY WERE NOT AT THEIR BEST TODAY AND THE TEAM KNEW THAT WHEN THEY REFLECTED ON THE GAME IN THE DRESSING ROOM AFTER THE GAME. THERE IS A LONG SEASON AHEAD AND THEY SHOULD NOT BE TOO DISSAPOINTED.  MAN OF THE MATCH WAS JOE CLARKE FOR HIS NON STOP RUNNING AND EFFORT IN MIDFIELD. THE NEXT GAME IS ON 12TH SEPT, KO 2-30PM, AWAY TO BUXTON RESERVES IN THE BENEVOLENT CUP 1ST ROUND.. TRAINING IS AT MADRA ON WEDNESDAY 7PM START.

MUNDESLEY KICKED OFF THEIR SEASON WITH A SHORT TRIP TO LOCAL RIVALS AND  LAST SEASONS LEAGUE CHAMPIONS GIMINGHAM. MUNDESLEY TOOK A SHORT WHILE TO ADJUST TO THE BLUSTERY CONDITIONS BUT SOON STARTED TO PLAY  FOOTBALL. WITH LINSEY GOING OFF EARLY IN THE FIRST HALF IT WAS ANOTHER CHANGE OF POSTIONS FOR MUNDESLEY WITH STEPHENS PUSHING UP FRONT, AND IT WAS A CHANGE THAT PAID OFF AS HE HEADED HOME A PIN POINT CROSS FROM CAPTAIN WILLIAMS TO PUT THE AWAY TEAM 1-0 UP. JUST BEFORE HALF TIME A DECISION BY THE THE REFEREE TO ALLOW PLAY TO CONTINUE AFTER A FOUL ON THE MUNDESLEY KEEPER ALLOWED GIMINGHAM A TAP IN TO MAKE IT 1-1 AT HALF TIME. HOLDEN REPLACED WILD FOR MUNDESLEY AND FROM THEN ON IT WAS ONLY MUNDESLEY THAT CREATED GOAL CHANCES. IT WAS STEPHENS AGAIN WHO RAN ON TO A PASS FROM CLARKE TO ROUND THE KEEPER AND MAKE IT 2-1. BUT WITH ONLY TWO MINUTES REMAINING A CORNER BY GIMINGHAM SAW MUNDESLEY FAIL TO CLEAR AND IT WAS 2-2. MUNDESLEY STILL HAD TIME TO MOUNT A FURTHER ATTACK WHICH SAW A FINE SAVE BY THE HOME KEEPER TO DENY WILLIAMS A WINNING GOAL. COBBOLD, THE MUNDESLEY KEEPER DID NOT HAVE A SAVE TO MAKE FROM OPEN PLAY, BUT THEY MUST TAKE THIER CHANCES IN FRONT OF GOAL IF THEY ARE TO CHALLENGE FOR THE TITLE THIS SEASON. OVERALL A GOOD RESULT AND MAN OF THE MATCH WAS STEPHENS. ITS ON TO RUNTON AWAY FOR THE NEXT GAME ON 5TH SEPT, KO 2-30PM. TRAINING IS AT MADRA ON THURSDAY'S; 7-15PM START

Reserve Reports

Mundesley reserves lost 3-1 at home against Corpusty.

With four players making their debut on a blustery afternoon, the reserves found it difficult to get going but did create some half chances mostly through the strong runs from Campbell. Indeed it was Campbell who came the closest with a stunning volley which smashed against the bar when it looked destined to find the net for what would have been his first goal for the club.

Corpusty also created a couple of half chances and the home side were let off when a one on one went wide. The away side eventually took the lead when a speculative effort dipped and swerved past the Mundesley keeper.

Mundesley came out brightly in the second half trying to come back from 1-0 down and again had most joy down the left from Campbell beating his man and getting behind the Corpusty defence only for his crosses to find the keeper. However, it was the away side that scored next to make it 2-0 and Mundesley heads could have gone down. They didn’t, and a retaken free kick was perfectly executed by Jake Bonham for his first goal for the club to make it 2-1 and potentially set up a super finish. This never came as Corpusty soon restored the two goal lead through a defensive mix up.

The bright Campbell then hobbled off injured and was replaced by debutant White who looked very strong and asked a few questions of the Corpusty defence. White had a strike that flew over the bar and then Bonham had another direct free kick – but this time went straight into the keepers hands.

The home side did finish strongly and deserved to get another one back but didn’t create any more clear chances.

Final score Mundesley 3 Corpusty 1. Man of the match: Derek Campbell

Oct 3rd

Mundesley reserves notched their first win of the season with a comfortable 2-0 home win over Felmingham.

With 11 players unavailable, and two players stepping up to the 1st team, the reserves were seemingly up against it even before a ball had been kicked. Added to this, they arrived at MADRA, for the first time this season, with no recognised keeper. Harvey stepped up to the challenge and Ian Wheeler filled in, in the second half, but in reality neither were needed as the Mundesley goal was never threatened.

Mundesley started brightly, as they had done in their first 2 games, and were finally rewarded with their first goal of the season, Wild crossing for Linsey to beat his man and strike the ball past the keeper. This should be the start of many for Linsey who scored 33 last season. The home side looked far more solid at the back with the experience of Bonham, in for Ellmore and Goodspeed, who came in to centre back allowing player manager Stroud to push into a midfield five. They controlled everything and limited Felmingham to just a few long range efforts and went in at the break 1-0 up. The second half was a very similar affair with Mundesley battling a little more than they would have liked and brought on Blyth to give more bite in midfield and later Harwood to support Linsey and eventually added a second to take all the points. Payne doing well down the left channel, rolled the ball back to Stroud, who looked up, picked out Harwood in the penalty area, and with 23 goals last year, had the confidence to cut inside his man and slot it past the keeper.

A much needed and deserved performance, clean sheet and three points for the Mallards. Well done to the whole squad and especially to Martin Goodspeed who was Man of the Match.

The reserves travel to Haisbro next week, 2.30pm ko.

Playing away for the second consecutive game Mundesley saw a repeat scoreline of their 1st game, going down 5-0 at Buxton.

Due to at least 7 1st team players being unavailable for the cup trip to Heacham and two players calling off with injury on the day, the reserves were forced to introduce a new keeper and a new centre back and welcomed back on the bench Wayne Ellis who has been out for a whole year after a serious knee injury. This could have made things very difficult but actually Mundesley started more brightly, were definitely the better team and had chances through Campbell and half chances from Linsey. However, from one away team attack, Buxton broke away and scored to make it 1-0 and it was a familiar story as they made it 3-0 at the break. Mundesley played better in the second half but poor defending lead to a 4th and a late goal flattered Buxton who seemed to score with every chance they got while at the other end it was never to be the away sides day with chances going begging from Bonham, Stroud and Linsey amongst others.

Much work is needed as well as the return of some key players to kick start the reserves’ season. The lads should not be down as last year the reserves lost their opening two matches and again, the younger players all played well, with man of the match going to Sam Fitt who never gave up in midfield.

THE FIRST GAME SINCE LAST SEASON’S PROMOTION, THE RESERVES STARTED WITH A RE-ARRANGED TRIP TO AYLSHAM AWAY AND CAME AWAY WITH A 5-0 DEFEAT.

DUE TO THE SUCCESS OF THE CLUB WITH DEVELOPING PLAYERS, A FEW OF THE SQUAD HAD MOVED TO HIGHER LEAGUE CLUBS, AND ADDED TO THE FACT THAT 6 FIRST TEAM PLAYERS WERE UNAVAILABLE FOR SELECTION, THE RESERVES HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO BRING TO THE STARTING LINE-UP FOUR 16 YEAR OLDS. NONE OF THESE DISAPPOINTED AND DID NOT DESERVE TO BE ON THE END OF SUCH A DEFEAT. BOTH TEAMS STARTED EVENLY BUT IT WAS AYLSHAM WHO CREATED EARLY ON AND EVENTUALLY SCORED WITH A CRACKING HEADER. A DEFENSIVE ERROR ALLOWED THE HOME SIDE TO BREAK AWAY TO MAKE IT 2-0 BUT IT COULD SO EASILY HAVE BEEN 4-3. THE MUNDESLEY KEEPER, RYAN OLIVER, ONE OF THE 16 YEAR OLDS, WAS SUPERB BETWEEN THE STICKS AND MADE SOME VERY MATURE, EXCELLENT SAVES WITH BOTH HIS HANDS AND FEET. GOING FORWARD THE AWAY SIDE HAD SOME GREAT CHANCES AFTER INCREDIBLE CREATIVITY LEADING TO ONE ON ONES FOR HARWOOD AND TWICE FOR CAMPBELL AND STRIKES FROM SMITH AND WHEELER. MUNDESLEY REMAINED POSITIVE AND MATCHED AYLSHAM IN THE SECOND HALF FOR PERFORMANCE AND AGAIN CREATED OPPORTUNITIES FOR CAMPBELL AND HARWOOD AMONGST OTHERS AND HAD AN UNFAIRLY DISALLOWED GOAL FOR THE FRUSTRATED HARWOOD. BONHAM, ANOTHER OF THE 16 YEAR OLDS, DID NOT GET THE CHANCE TO SHINE ON THE RIGHT WING AND WAS REPLACED LATE ON BY LAST SEASONS TOP SCORER LINSEY WITH THE IMPRESSIVE SMITH SWITCHING TO THE RIGHT, BUT STILL MUNDESLEY COULD NOT SCORE. WITH THE AWAY SIDE PUSHING UP AYLSHAM SCORED LATE GOALS TO FLATTER THEM AND IT WAS UNJUST ON OLIVER IN GOAL AS HE MADE MORE SUPER SAVES TO TAKE THE MUNDESLEY MAN OF THE MATCH PERFORMANCE. DESPITE THE RESULT THE FUTURE IS VERY BRIGHT FOR MUNDESLEY FOOTBALL CLUB.
